Veggies (Week 2)

Today we got the second batch of veggies from the farm, identical with the one last week. Thus we'll have a lot of dark greens and lettuce (3 types again, plus spinach). I'll have to give some away. Luckily we have friends who are not squeamish about free veggies. Last week we used the lettuce for salads every night and I used the dark greens for side dishes (sauted with vegetable oil, garlic, onion, red hot pepper flakes, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar). I know, I'll have to learn to use them for something else soon. How about a quiche? That sounds yummy, but I don't think I want to bake in this heat. Hey, we're still holding strong, no AC yet. It's tough in the evening when we're at home. The thing is, one you turn the AC on, that's it. You'll have it on for the rest of the summer (or not, if you have a thermostat, which we do). Last weekend (the hottest so far) we took a bike ride to the Eastern Shore with the Maryland Outdoor Club (MOC). It was fun, but, man, it was hot. We rode from Easton to Oxford, then took the ferry to St. Michaels. We had lunch at the Crab and Steak House . I was pleasantly surprised. It just looked like the kind of overpriced place in that part of the town. But I had a really good Dirty Banana ( creme de bananes, creme de cacao,Kahlua® coffee liqueur, vanilla ice cream ) for starters, so that might have put me in the right mood. Then I went really bold and ordered a shrimp salad on whole grain toast . Tim had the very blackened tuna sandwich . Both were really good. Of course, we ate too much, so then sat on the benches waiting for the other members of the group to finish, in the shade, like boas after a huge meal, incapable of moving, digesting out food. We had to make some room for some ice cream at Justine's. I really like whatever I had there last year (might have been a fancy milkshake), but this year I was not so impressed. I had the coffee ice cream, but I got distracted at some point by the fact that the lights were on inside the shop. Believe me, there was plenty of light there. It seems that's how the owners want it: the lights on at all times (yeah, I asked the two young men behind the counter). So I'm writing a letter to the owners.
