First weekend in June

We've had quite an eventful weekend, for one when we didn't really go away. Like last weekend (Memorial Day weekend). That was great: we went camping to Janes Island State Park for three whole days. It was great. This was the third year in a row we did this, and it just doesn't get old. Anyway, I wanted to post about this past weekend, which was supposed to be quiet and relaxing, home based (that is, we're not going away for the weekend). On Friday night we had dinner with our friends George and Lisa at Ram's Head in Savage Mills. It was such a nice evening to eat out and chat with friends. We also rode the motorcycle there, and the exciting part was that we almost ran out of gas coming back home. But luckily, these bikes come with reserve tanks that get you out of trouble. On Saturday morning I had my private tennis lesson (my coach is Tim, he even has a hat that has "Coach" written above the visor). I practiced my serve until I got a bit more confident. But, man, it was hot! It really felt like summer. After lunch we had thunderstorms so we stayed in. We had Rosangela over for barbecued ribs. And then, when the rain stopped we went to the batting cage so Tim can practice. I don't do softball, so I watched. The most exciting day of the weekend was Sunday when we had a mixed doubles tennis match in Olney, with Steve and Jenny. They won, but it was a lot of fun. Then Tim & I went strawberry picking at Larriland Farms. We probably got 12-13 pounds of them. Roland was there too. He only got about 7 lbs. We put the berries to good use ASAP. First, Helene and I made strawberry daiquiris spiked with rum. I told her, after my second or third glass, that she's my favorite sister-in-law now. She made us some yummy tuna sandwiches with moon radishes from hear garden on English muffins, that soaked up some of that liquor so I stayed somewhat sober for the rest of the day. I made strawberry jam, using a recipe from a cookbook (funny, as a Xmas gift from Helene!). I think it came out pretty good. I checked with my Mom today and it turns out her recipe is almost identical (1 quart berries, 1 or 2 cups sugar, 2tbsp lemon juice). The difference was in the details, such as length of cooking time, sliced (book) or whole (Mom) berries. I also made a strawberry cobbler that was pretty good (pic to come). This was my second time making it. If you like apple cobblers, you'll love berry cobblers. Now we have this whole week to eat those berries.
