The Washington Nats
This weekend we went and saw a baseball game in DC at the new ballpark. The Nats played the O's and Tim got tx from Laura (Roland's daughter) . Plus we hadn't seen the new stadium. It's quite nice, and easily accessible by Metro, straight on the Green line which is great for us since we get on at Greenbelt. The game was not as exciting as the last one we saw the Nats play . That was last year, at the old ballpark, against the Atlanta Braves. I saw for the first time several home runs that night. Plus, it was Hispanic or Latino night , so the atmosphere was fantastic. To be fair, yesterday it was probably too hot for it to be a great day at the game.
After the game we went to Jaleo in Chinatown for dinner with Mark and Ashlea. We got there as the Spain-Germany soccer game, the Europe 2008 final was ending (Spain won). It was packed house and a great vibe. I loved it. The food was great, interesting, plus they had a fisherman's soup (sort of like a bouillabaisse) that happened to be fantastic. I find it very rarely and it's one of those things - like anything with duck - that I order if it's on the menu.
Tim and I git there early so we sat at the bar. I love it, you get a very different feel then at a table. I ordered a glass of sangria (too sweet for my taste), and Tim had a beer. We started with Pan con tomate (toasted slices of rustic bread brushed with fresh tomatoes and topped with generous slices of Serrano ham). It was very good, I only wished the bread had been toasted. Then we ordered a ton of food. Tim had the ‘Rossejat’ (traditional fried pasta, paella style, with monkfish and shrimp, cooked in a seafood broth) and the Vieiras con mojo picón (seared scallops with a traditional, spicy pepper sauce from the Canary Islands)
that were really good. I had the Sopa de pescado “Va por ti, Clemente!”, a traditional fisherman’s soup with mussels, shrimp, cockle clams and monkfish. That was what I would go back to Jaleo for. Mark and Ashlea had various dishes, such as the really nice Espinacas a la Catalana
(sautéed spinach, pine nuts, raisins and apples), Cordero a la brasa con salsa de romero (grilled lamb chops with rosemary sauce ) and the Patatas bravas – New way, Jose (sliced, fried potatoes topped with a spicy tomato sauce and alioli), which turned out to look almost like chips, but they tasted ok. We finished with Espuma de avellanas y c
hocolate (chocolate and hazelnut mousse torte) that was extremely rich and smooth. I like that they used dark semi-sweet chocolate for it. It was a great meal, I like this Tapas concept, you get to try various things of very good quality and preparation and if you're careful you might actually eat less (it didn't happen for us; maybe next time).
